Jems family took Doug in after his mom deserted him, and his father fell apart for a little while. Claire represents the real problem at the center of the proceedings. Welliver: The character Dino was a cop who grew up in Charlestown. Jem is his right hand muscle, and unquestioning backup. David Fincher does an even more exaggerated version of that. And it is a bit like visiting royalty there, for me, in a way that I dont get in any other town or city in the world. Affleck: The only other thing Ill say about the chase sequence, it definitely reminded me of Jimmy Tingle in the 80s. Its worth bearing in mind that these are state-wide statistics, which do not differentiate betweenneighborhoods. Stockard: Obviously youre making a movie so you mythologize it a little bit. WebThe Town. Affleck: That was fascinating. Three friends and acquaintances who had lied on the stand before testified against the five, along with four convicted bank robbers from Charlestown. He often has a very small crew. That was the most important part, because he could so easily lapse into clich. When we started, I said, I need a driver whos Charlestown born and bred. The movies center is Charlestown, right across the bridge from the rest of Boston, a legend in illicit locales. And this was toward the end of the shoot. This isnt because those criminals made the sloppiest getaways. He was given just 13 days, during which the sound of automatic gun fire spooked a wedding party that had hired Fenway as a venue and were apparently not made aware that there was also a film shoot in progress. Its not just an accent, its more of an attitude. And then he was out, so we were using him again for research. And he read and blew me away. Affleck: The day that were shooting the shoot-out with Jeremy, where he gets killed out in front of the McDonalds behind Fenwaywhen you do these stunts with cars, you have to really clean the streets immaculately because these drivers are precision drivers. When I saw it, I thought, Its fine. I wound up learning a lot from how Ben did that. Its a hard movie to watch. Burch: We did one of the premieres at Fenway. He grew up in Cambridge,which was close enough to Charlestown for him to know a little about it. Who was in which car?, Burke: I remember we were all standing around and they were like, Oh yeah, were gonna blow this thing. There was a van parked there and they fucking blew it up. Affleck: There did kind of get to be a glut of Boston movies, and everybody did a Boston accent. If youre gonna make a film of it, you have to add something to it, or try to. The bars in the film are real Charlestown bars:Old Sullys (for townies), where Douggie and Jem meet early on, and New Sullys (for yuppies), where Hamms FBI officer approaches Niki. Hall: Hes just a very good storyteller. He was in his early 20s. Afflecks big killing in The Town is Fenway Park, and over 60 years later, the take is the same. I wanted to be a part of that. David Crockett (producer): They read, and not saying who she was or what she was in, she did the [Boston] accent. Needless to say, it really shook me up.
